Bridges in Mathematics
Our classroom utilizes a math workshop and the thinking strategies to support instruction.
This year we are implementing a new curriculum called 'Bridges in Mathematics'. I'm excited to try this new curriculum and blend direct instruction, structured investigations, and open exploration so that students really understand the concepts behind the math they are learning. |
Unit OneThis unit reviews mathematical concepts while introducing and establishing routines that will be used during second grade.
Unit TwoThis unit focuses on reviewing and extending addition and subtraction facts. We work with place value up to 3 digits and begin working with double-digit addition.
Unit ThreeIn this unit we continue working with double-digit addition and subtraction through story problems. We then practice graphing information in various ways.
Unit FourIn this unit we concentrate measurement with inches, feet and yards. We learn appropriate tools to measure with and practice estimating and finding exact lengths.
Unit FiveFor unit five we focus on place value up to the thousands. We begin adding and subtracting in multiples of 10 and 100. We also start working with money word problems.
Unit SixWe focus on Geometry during this unit. We talk about the names of shapes. We look at both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes and how they are similar and different.
Unit SevenWe will be focusing on the metric system in unit seven as well as beginning to work with fractions. Students will also practice writing and solving word problems with money involving 2 and 3-digit numbers.
Unit EightIn the final unit, students will be working with length to the nearest inch to collect, organize and interpret data. This unit integrates a lot of scientific work from our force and motion unit in hands on activities.
